DAY 1

Day 1 of the 2nd Annual under 5ís tournament for women was played under perfect conditions on Saturday 30th July on our two greens. The tournament designed for female bowlers who have been playing for five years or less is to give newer bowlers a chance to test themselves against bowlers of similar experience. 42 players in 14 pools played two games each with the winner of each section plus the two best runner ups going through to the sudden death round of 16. The group winners were Michelle Treadwell, Denise Owens, Gaylene Scanlon, Joannae Walker, Denise Orazi, Karen Jones, Jan Ferguson, Lisa Paul, Gorame Momo, Elizabeth Harrison, Robyn Beaumont, Lyn Wratten, Brenda Perry and Tracy Lindsay with the two best runners up Joy Jorssen and Denita Payne. There was some a great play in the eight games with some new talent coming to the fore. Last yearís winner Michelle Treadwell went down to Denise Owens 12 to 17. Winners of the other seven games were Gayle Scanlon 17-16 up over last yearís runner up Joanne Warner with an umpireís call on the last shot, Karen Jones 18-6, Lisa Paul 17-13, Elizabeth Harrison 18-3, Robyn Beaumont 18-8, Tracy Lindsay 19-9 and Denita Payne 17-11. The quarter finals will commence at 9.00 am on Sunday 31st July.

DAY 2

The second day of the under 5ís tournament for women was played again under perfect conditions with a touch of spring in the air. The second and final day saw the quarter finals, semi finals and finals contested. The final was contested between Robyn Beaumont of North Sydney and Karen Jones of St Ives. The variance in clubs playing showed the popularity of this tournament for women who have played for under five years. Both players had good semi finals wins. Guest marker for the final was NSW representative Jan Rolph. Karen made a fantastic start scoring the maximum four shots on the first end with the winner being the first to 17. The next end Robyn had settled her nerves and picked up one shot and another shot on the next end. Karen then won the next three ends bringing the score to eight to two. By the 10thend Karen had built her lead to 10 shots and only need another four to claim the tournament victory. Robyn refused to surrender and came back with four shots in two ends. However Karen proved to be the victor with single shot wins over the next few ends and eventually won 17 to 8. Both players were very pleased with their result. Robyn said it was fantastic to reach the final. Karen said that she loves playing singles and the victory was great. The victory adds to Karen already impressive major and minor championships at her club. All this from a player who has only been playing for two years!

The quarter finals started off the day with eight players hopefuls that they will make it through to the finals. The results of the quarter finals were Denise Owens 18 Gaylene Scanlon 4, Karen Jones 17 Lisa Paul3, Robyn Beaumont 17 Elizabeth Harrison 12, Denita Payne 17 Tracy Lindsay 10.

The semi finals started just before 11 am with all four players focused on a finals spot. The semi final margins were a lot closer than the quarters with Karen Jones just getting up over Denise Owens 17-15 and the other semi final Robyn Beaumont 18 Denita Payne 10.

Well done to all players it what was an exceptional weekend of bowls. See you in 2012.
