Discover the Rich History of Ashfield Bowling Club
Established in the late 19th century, Ashfield Bowling Club has been a cherished part of the New South Wales community for over a century. Founded in 1889, our club has grown from humble beginnings to become a vibrant hub for social interaction and recreation. As one of the oldest bowling clubs in the region, we’ve seen generations of families come together to enjoy the game, celebrate milestones, and create lasting memories.
The Park & the Green
The story of Ashfield Bowling Club began in 1879 with the establishment of Ashfield Park, championed by the visionary Henry Parkes. His support led to the purchase of land that would become a cherished community space. In 1889, Alderman Joseph Mortley proposed setting aside a portion of the park for a bowling green, a move that was unanimously approved by the Ashfield Council on November 26th of that year.
In the same spirit of community, Alderman Mortley was elected as the first President of Ashfield Bowling Club, leading a dedicated group of 17 foundation members. Together, they nurtured a vibrant space for social interaction and friendly competition.
It’s Official!
The greens were officially opened in February 1891, marking a significant milestone in the club's history. Later that year, the club’s pavilion was completed at a cost of £150, providing a welcoming space for members to gather and enjoy the game. Alderman Mortley, as the first President, guided the club with a vision of community and camaraderie.
